PhD. Research Training

Parallel to the conference on Friday 9 October, a special PhD training session will be organised in which researchers, who are engaged at various stages of their PhD or other Post Graduate Research  work will actively discuss their work in a friendly environment such as workshop and focus group settings. In addition, there will be research skills training sessions and also discussions on research methodological issues. Further details on the plans for the day will be available very soon within this page. This day is organised with the kind collaboration of CIB TG 53 (Task Group on Postgraduate Research Training in Building and Construction) and BuHU The Research Institute for the Built and Human Environment, University of Salford.

Planned Agenda Phd. Research Training, Friday 9 October 2009

Morning session
10.00 am – 10.45 am: PhD Researcher experience
This session starts by setting the scene through an introduction to the workshop and will attempt to generate the much needed interactivity at the beginning. The session will explore the PhD students’ experience both from academic and social aspects. While the speaker will start the discussion by taking the students through his previous experience as a PhD researcher, the students will be given the chance to talk about their own experiences as the discussion progresses.
 
10.45 am – 11.30 am: Doing a PhD – a supervisor perspective
This session is mainly focused on giving the students an insight into how the supervisor sees the PhD journey. Student – supervisor relationship will be discussed along with the expectations and the responsibilities of the parties especially looking through the supervisor’s lens. 

11.30 am – 12.30 pm: PhD research and research methodology
This session aims to introduce the research methodology to research students particularly in the early stage of their PhDs. The discussion encompasses the attributes of PhD award, the ontology and epistemology issues, deductive and inductive research, quantitative and qualitative research, overview of various research tools, and validity and reliability issues of PhD research.

12.30 pm – 1.00 pm: Lunch break
Afternoon session
1.00 pm – 2.30 pm: Breakout session / focus group 
 Students will be given few research scenarios and will be asked them to work in groups to identify the most appropriate research methodology for the given scenario. Each group will be given a chance to defend their methodology and the other groups will play the role of the “devil’s advocate” along with the facilitators. 
 
2.30pm –2.50 pm: Q & A session (all)
Facilitators will be taking the questions from the students.
